As summer ends and the weather turns cooler and wetter, it’s time to prepare your garden for autumn, including your outdoor cushions. In this guide, we’ll explain how to store them properly to keep them fresh and in great shape.

Why proper storage matters

Outdoor cushions are sturdy but not indestructible. Rain, cold, sunlight, and mould can damage the fabric and filling. Proper storage helps:

keep them fresh and good-looking longer
prevent mould and odours
reduce replacements and waste

Can you leave outdoor cushions outside?

It depends. High-quality all-weather fabrics like Sunbrella, Sunproof or Amai can stay outdoors, especially under a roof.
Standard foam cushions should be stored indoors or in a waterproof box to prevent damage and mould.

Best way to store outdoor cushions

Brush off dirt and stains.
Let them dry completely.
Store in a dry place (shed, attic, or cupboard).
Use a storage bag or box.
Allow ventilation.

Vacuum storage – Yes or no?

Not ideal, especially for thick foam cushions, they may lose shape. For thin decorative cushions, it’s fine short-term.

Waterproof outdoor storage

If indoor space is limited:

garden cabinet with closure

Make sure it’s not completely airtight to avoid condensation and musty smells.

Large cushions

Roll them instead of folding to avoid creases. Use an XL cover or tall storage box.

Winter storage

Cold, rain, UV, and mould can all cause damage.
Store them in a dry, frost-free space, optionally with a moisture absorber, and check occasionally.
